    Description

The 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent is the undisputed key date of the entire Lincoln Wheat cent series, and this example has been certified MS63 RB by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC). Struck at the San Francisco Mint in the very first year of the Lincoln cent's production, this coin carries the initials of its designer, Victor David Brenner, prominently displayed on the reverse — a feature that sparked public controversy and led the U. S. Mint to remove the initials after just days of production. This specimen displays the warm red-brown (RB) surfaces characteristic of an original, lightly toned Mint State coin, retaining meaningful areas of original mint luster alongside natural patina. The obverse presents Brenner's iconic right-facing portrait of Abraham Lincoln — the first U. S. circulating coin to depict a historical American figure — flanked by IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY. The reverse reads ONE CENT / UNITED STATES OF AMERICA within wheat stalks. Housed in NGC's rigid, tamper-evident slab with a holographic security label, this coin is display-ready and registry-eligible.

    Frequently asked questions

The 1909-S VDB was struck at the San Francisco Mint in the first year of Lincoln cent production. Public outcry over designer Victor David Brenner's prominent initials on the reverse led the Mint to halt production mid-year, resulting in a total mintage of only 484,000 coins — making it the lowest-mintage and most coveted date in the entire Wheat cent run.
RB stands for Red-Brown, an NGC color designation for copper coins that retain between 25% and 95% of their original mint red luster. It indicates this 1909-S VDB has not fully toned to brown and still displays vibrant original surfaces alongside natural patina, a hallmark of a well-preserved Mint State example.
The coin is sealed inside an NGC tamper-evident sonically bonded holder, commonly called a slab. The back of the holder features NGC's full holographic security label. The rigid case protects the coin from environmental damage and handling, and the certification number 8439674-001 can be cross-referenced in NGC's online registry.
Victor David Brenner designed the coin. The reverse features the inscription ONE CENT flanked by two wheat stalks, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcing above — the classic Wheat cent reverse. Brenner's initials VDB appear at the bottom of the reverse, the detail that made this issue historically significant and scarce.
