Fraud Prevention

How CoinDuffle detects and prevents fraud — device fingerprinting, risk scoring, and automated protection systems.

Fraud Prevention

CoinDuffle employs advanced fraud prevention systems to protect both buyers and sellers from fraudulent activity. Our multi-layered approach combines technology, human review, and industry best practices to keep the marketplace safe.

How We Detect Fraud

Device Fingerprinting

CoinDuffle uses device fingerprinting technology to identify and track devices interacting with the platform. Device fingerprinting collects non-personal technical characteristics of your device and browser to create a unique identifier. This helps us:

  • Detect suspicious devices — Identify devices that have been associated with previous fraudulent activity.
  • Flag unusual behavior — Detect when someone is using tools to mask their identity or location.
  • Prevent account takeover — Recognize when a new or unfamiliar device accesses your account, which could indicate unauthorized access.

Device fingerprinting works invisibly in the background. You don't need to install anything or take any action.

Risk Scoring

Every transaction on CoinDuffle is assigned a risk score based on multiple factors:

  • Transaction amount — Unusually large orders, especially from new accounts, receive higher scrutiny.
  • Account age and history — Established accounts with a clean history are considered lower risk.
  • Device and location signals — Transactions from unfamiliar devices, locations, or using VPNs may receive elevated risk scores.
  • Payment method — Certain payment patterns (like multiple failed attempts or mismatched billing information) can indicate fraud.
  • Behavioral signals — The way a user navigates the site, how quickly they checkout, and other behavioral patterns are analyzed for anomalies.

Risk scoring is automated and happens in real time. Most legitimate transactions pass through instantly without any additional action required.

Velocity Checks

We monitor the speed and frequency of certain actions to detect automated or coordinated fraud:

  • Multiple orders in rapid succession
  • Repeated failed payment attempts
  • Frequent account creation from the same device or IP
  • Bulk purchasing patterns that deviate from normal behavior

What Happens When Fraud Is Detected

Low-Risk Flags

For minor risk signals, the transaction proceeds normally but is flagged for post-transaction review. You won't notice anything different.

Medium-Risk Flags

For moderate risk signals, you may experience:

  • Additional verification — You might be asked to verify your email, phone number, or identity before the transaction can proceed.
  • Temporary hold — Your order may be placed on a brief hold (usually minutes to hours) while our team reviews it.

High-Risk Flags

For significant risk signals:

  • Transaction blocked — The order may be declined automatically.
  • Account review — Your account may be temporarily restricted pending a manual review.
  • Contact from support — Our fraud team may reach out to verify the transaction.

If Your Legitimate Transaction Is Flagged

Fraud detection systems occasionally flag legitimate transactions — a phenomenon known as a "false positive." If this happens to you:

  1. Check your email — You may have received a message from CoinDuffle asking for additional verification.
  2. Contact support — Reach out to support@coinduffle.com with your order details.
  3. Provide requested information — Our team may ask for additional verification to confirm the transaction is legitimate.
  4. Resolution — Once verified, your order will be released and processed normally.

We apologize for any inconvenience when this happens. Our fraud prevention systems are designed to err on the side of caution to protect all marketplace participants.

How We Protect Your Account

Unauthorized Access Detection

If someone attempts to access your account from an unfamiliar device or location, CoinDuffle's systems may:

  • Require additional verification before granting access
  • Send you an email alert about the login attempt
  • Temporarily lock the account if multiple failed login attempts are detected

Payment Fraud Prevention

For purchases made on CoinDuffle:

  • Card verification — We verify that the billing address matches the card issuer's records (AVS check) and verify the card's security code (CVC check).
  • 3D Secure — For eligible transactions, we may use 3D Secure authentication (e.g., Verified by Visa, Mastercard SecureCode) for an additional layer of verification.
  • Monitoring — All transactions are monitored by Stripe's fraud detection systems in addition to CoinDuffle's own systems.

What You Can Do

While we handle the heavy lifting on fraud prevention, here are steps you can take to keep your account safe:

  • Use a strong, unique password — Don't reuse passwords from other websites.
  • Keep your email secure — Your email is used for password resets and account notifications. Make sure it has strong security.
  • Report suspicious activity — If you notice anything unusual on your account (orders you didn't place, address changes you didn't make, etc.), contact support immediately.
  • Don't share your credentials — Never share your CoinDuffle login information with anyone.
  • Be wary of phishing — CoinDuffle will never ask for your password via email. If you receive a suspicious email claiming to be from CoinDuffle, don't click any links — contact us directly.
